I’ve 跑 nearly every day of my life for the past nine years. There are precious few things in life 那 I love more than lacing up my shoes 和 going out for a 跑 . It doesn’t matter where I’m going (provided I’m safe) or how long I’m out there because as long as I’m moving, I’m happy. An hours-long 跑 through the mountains, a handful of minutes around my neighborhood block, or a solid half-hour session on my local school track: the variety is endless. It all depends on what I’m in the mood for 和 what race is on my 日历 .
Having the opportunity to race – to compete with both others (extrinsically) 和 yourself (intrinsically) – is an opportunity 那 few other sports give their recreational athletes once they graduate from school. While I’ll never be able to play basketball at Madison Square Garden, I can still 跑 the very same Boston Marathon 那 the world’s best 和 most elite 跑 ners traverse, which is a pretty special 和 cool feeling.
While many 跑 ners love to 跑 simply for the sake of 跑步 , for many other people, they find a greater joy 和 a greater pull for racing. There are definitely some benefits to racing, 和 for me, I really like the structure 那 训练 gives me, 和 I love toeing the line 和 pushing my limits to see what I’m capable of.
If you’re a regular or semi-regular 跑 ner – or hell, even if you’re just starting out – I can’t recommend enough 那 you sign-up for your first race. Here’s why:
我承认 that sometimes the last thing I want to do is go out for a 跑 , but when I have a race on my 日历 – one 那 I’m 训练 for 和 one 那 I paid my hard-earned money on – I get out there 和 do what I need to do, excuses be damned. More often than 不 , race entry fees are non-transferable 和 non-refundable, so if you sign-up 和 don’t train, chances are high 那 you won’t show up on race day, 和 you’re essentially throwing your cash down the drain. Even when the weather is horrible, if there’s a race on my radar, I figure it out 和 do what I need to do to train so 那 come race day, I know I am prepared as possible 和 have zero regrets 和 thoughts about what I “should have done.” There is great peace in knowing 那 you’re standing at the starting line prepared.
Training for a race gives you all of these opportunities each week for months at a time. It can be uncomfortable to venture outside your comfort zone, but it’ll in these non-comfort-zone areas 那 you’ll find out how strong you really are, both mentally 和 physically, 和 when you get comfortable being uncomfortable – 跑步 farther distances or 跑步 faster paces – you’ll be able to push yourself in ways 那 you never could have imagined doing. It’s intimidating, sure, but it’s also exhilarating.
We 跑 ners like our routines, but again, it’s when we’re outside our comfort zones 那 we grow as athletes. When you’re 训练 for a race, you’ll likely find 那 you 跑 distances, paces, 和 锻炼 s 那 you usually don’t do. To be sure, you’ll still have days where you can simply “just 跑 ” for a set number of miles or minutes, but you’ll also shaking things up 通过 跑步 in ways 那 you probably weren’t doing before – 锻炼 s like tempo 跑 s, track 工作 , long 跑 s, hills, fartleks, trail 跑 s, 和 the list goes on. Variety is the spice of life, after all.
You’ve got 不 hing to lose 通过 signing up for your first race. Provided 那 you’re healthy, able to train for whatever the distance is 那 you’re eying, 和 那 you’re uninjured, seriously, why 不 race? It can be so easy to wait to race until something else happens first, but take life 通过 the reigns 和 control your own destiny, as cheesy as 那 sounds. There will inevitably always be some reason 那 you’ll use against yourself, a reason 那 you’ll rationalize necessitates you waiting to race “some other time,” but more often than 不 , excuses are garbage. Stop procrastinating, 和 just do it.
The 跑步 community is very welcoming, 和 you’ll see 那 firsthand when you’re toeing the line at your first race. Running is very popular right now, from 跑步 5ks on roads all the way up to 跑步 100-milers on trails 和 mountains, 和 with a little research 和 some appropriate 训练 和 planning, you’ll surely be able to find the distance 那 suits your fancy.
